Dr. Abha Mishra
Presently, Dr. Abha Mishra is working as Professor at the School of Biochemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi, with over two decades of academic and research experience in the fields of Fermentation Technology, Drug Discovery and Development, Drug Delivery Techniques, and Intellectual Property Rights. She earned her Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering from IIT (BHU) erstwhile IT BHU in 2001, after completing her M.Tech. in Biochemical Engineering (1997) with First Rank distinction. Dr. Abha Mishra has extensive expertise in Biochemical and Fermentation Engineering, microbial bioprocess development, production optimization, and biomanufacturing of high-value bioactive compounds. Her research experience encompasses the development and optimization of microbial processes for pharmaceuticals, therapeutic biomolecules, antibiotics, biofuels, and biopolymers.
A significant area of her current research is the development of a scalable, pilot-level biomanufacturing process for Epirubicin production using Streptomyces clavuligerus and cane molasses, her research on Streptomyces has also included the production and optimization of important pharmaceutical products, including tacrolimus (FK506), an immunosuppressant, and vancomycin, a glycopeptide antibiotic.
Her research portfolio further extends to microbial hydrogen production through dark fermentation, Her recent work has explored lignocellulosic biomass as a substrate for biohydrogen production and the application of advanced optimization approaches. Dr. Mishra has also contributed substantially to the field of biopolymer and bioplastic production. Her research and student supervision include the production of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) using Alcaligenes species, while her research portfolio includes work on microbial polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), ε-polylysine, and other value-added microbial products. She has also pursued research on the production of hyaluronic acid, L-asparaginase, laccase, protease inhibitors, glucose isomerase, fumaric acid, ε-polylysine, and other industrially and therapeutically relevant products, demonstrating broad expertise in fermentation-based production and downstream processing. Her research further extends to drug targeting and novel therapeutic technologies, including work on the production of ε-polylysine and its conjugates for drug-targeting applications, as well as research involving natural phytochemical bioactive compounds and cancer-related biosensing technologies. These efforts demonstrate the integration of microbiology, biochemical engineering, biomaterials, and nanobiotechnology toward healthcare and pharmaceutical applications.
With a career spanning fermentation technology, drug discovery and development, drug delivery, microbial biomanufacturing, bioenergy, and biomaterials, Dr. Abha Mishra brings a multidisciplinary perspective to translating microbial technologies from laboratory research toward optimized and scalable processes.
