The Department of Ceramic Engineering is celebrating its Centenary throughout the year 2024 by organizing various technical talks, symposia, alumni meets and conferences. The founder of Banaras Hindu University, Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandit Mandan Mohan Malviya Ji has started courses in Glass and Ceramic Technology as early as 1924 with the noble objective of advancing glass and ceramic technology in India. In the year 1956, the Departments of Glass Technology and Ceramic Technology were merged to form the Department of Silicate Technology, offering a 4-Year degree course by injecting into its curriculum balanced engineering and scientific contents. In the year 1968, the Department of Silicate Technology was renamed as the Department of Ceramic Engineering under Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU). The first-ever department was established in preindependent-India and Asia to develop skilled human resources for various ceramic industries country-wide. The IT-BHU was transformed into Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi [i.e., IIT(BHU), Varanasi] in the year 2012 and currently, the Department of Ceramic Engineering belongs to IIT(BHU), Varanasi. This unique 100 years old department is only existed in the Indian IIT-systems. The department holds an unparalleled and significant contribution to building up the nation in the past 100 years with a vast contribution towards academic, industrial, and R&D areas in our country. Presently, the department offers 4-Year B. Tech (Bachelors of Technology), 5-Year (Integrated Dual Degree) IDD (i.e., Bachelor + Master), 2-Year M. Tech (Masters of Technology), and Ph.D. Programmes in the areas of Ceramic/Materials Science and Engineering. The department is actively engaged in teaching and research and well recognized for its strong capabilities to support the various teaching and research activities worldwide. The department is actively pursuing research in the emerging areas of energy materials & devices, electrical & electronic ceramics, functional materials, glass & glass-ceramics, refractories & high temperature ceramics, structural ceramics & composites, bio-ceramics, ceramic whitewares, etc. The faculties of the department are actively involved in publishing research papers in peerreviewed, SCI-Indexed, reputed national and international journals. Similarly, faculties are very active in participating/organizing in various national/international conferences, workshops, webinars, faculty development programs, etc. Since 2012, many novel inventions in this department have been patented (both national and international) for future technology transfer and product development, whereas a few technologies are already transferred to Indian companies to develop products in Indian market. As IIT(BHU) is carrying forward the legacy of the founder of Banaras Hindu University, Mahamana Pandit Mandan Mohan Malviya Ji, the Department of Ceramic Engineering is committed to the impactful social advancement by imparting education, developing skilled manpower, and innovations to students/scholars who excelled in their field while further contributing to sustainable society-building. The Department of Ceramic Engineering is currently working on many Govt. of India projects to support and implement the primary goals of contemporary national missions, including “Kaushal Bharat Kushal Bharat”, “Creative-India Innovative-India”, “Make-in-India”, “Startup India”, and “Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India)”. To fulfill the aim, the faculties of the department are relentlessly running many research projects of national importance and many R&D projects from various ceramic industries. Primarily, those projects have been sponsored by Ministry of Education (MoE), Ministry of Human Resource and development (MHRD), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Defense Research and Development Organizations (DRDO), Council of Science and Technology (CSTUP), UGC-DAE Consortium, Bahabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) and many non-government agencies and industries.
