I am elated to introduce you to Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi, an ever- evolving institute where knowledge meets character, passion meets compassion; tradition meets modernity; and progress meets sustainability.
For more than a century, the institute has been the epicentre of excellence in higher education offering a world of opportunities to its students, and empowering them to engineer societal transformations through innovation and integration. Over these years, the institute has passed through several phases of transformation – from its inception as Banaras Engineering College (BENCO) in 1919 to its current standing as Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi. The institute attributes its existence to Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, the founder of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), the first residential University of modern India. Through his prescient vision, the Mahamana could foresee the vital role of technical education in strengthening independent India. Furthering the Mahamana’s vision, the institute has evolved exemplarily setting high standards in teaching and learning, research and development, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Being true to is credo of “education is character,” the institute has been emphasizing the practice of independent and autonomous learning with nuanced facilitation by the educators. It has also created an eco-system for the smooth integration of the ever-evolving educational technologies into the prevalent practices in order to enable the faculty and students adapt to the global demands. The institute has always strived to ensure for its people a “holistic readiness” comprising knowledge readiness through learning by doing; innovation readiness through research, development, and collaboration; entrepreneurship readiness through an immersive start-up culture; challenge readiness through resilience; and society readiness through undeterred conviction.
The institute completed its 100 years in 2019, and we wish to take forward the legacy with rejuvenated vigour and sheer dedication with a commitment to nation building. With support from the stakeholders, we will continue to inculcate in our students the values, a task entrusted to us by our revered founder Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. With students, faculty and alumni scaling greater heights, the striving for growth is renewed with each passing day. We look forward to another century of imparting excellent education and providing everyone with the platform to become prosperous and contribute meaningfully to nation building.
