Prof. Ram Pyare  obtained  M. Sc. (Chemistry) in 1976 & PhD in Ceramic Engineering from Banaras Hindu University in 1981. Currently, he is the  Professor of Ceramic Engineering Department, IIT BHU. His current research interests are in processing and characterization of glass, glass ceramic and electronic materials,Ceramic Technical Analysis&Bio-ceramic.

Development of Micronutrient glasses: Micronutrients are essential for the proper physiological functioning of the plants. Their action towards plants is similar to that of vitamins in a human body. The release of micronutrient ions from glass depends upon the pH of soil and particle size of the glass. For control release of micronutrients suitable for various soil conditions different control agents have been introduced in glass.
 
The production figures of major crops for India on world record are much below. Hence possibilities exist to pay attention to improve production figures by using micronutrient glass. Different micronutrient glasses have been made and their leaching characteristics have been studied. These studies provide sufficient information for agricultural uses suitable for different soil conditions in India which may be helpful in increasing the quality and yield of major crops like paddy. Wheat etc. needed for the large population suffering from food deficiencies.
 
Oxygen ion activity in binary alkali silicate glass: Development of desired colours, decolorization and refining are phenomena of interest ot produce high quality defect free glasses. Oxidation –reduction reactions in glasses play important roles in colourization, decolourization, refining and quality control of glasses. Redox reaction is mainly governed by oxygen ion activity. Relative oxygen ion activity (Δlog O2-) has been calculated for binary alkali silicate glasses at 1400 0C with air as the furnace atmosphere. It is predicted that there would be an approximately a linear relationship between log K1 and ((Δlog O2-)  for any redox pair for binary alkali silicate glasses in the concentration range 20-40 mole % alkali oxides. The linear relationship opens up a new possibility of predicting the concentrations of redox ions present in lower and higher valence states in any binary alkali silicate glasses containing alkali oxides in the above system.
 
Development of new methods for determination of valence of redox ions: Valence state of redox ion plays important role in colouration, decolorization, refining and quality control of glasses. Volumetric methods are complicated, tedius time consuming and unsuitable for the determination of different valence states in glasses. A spectrophotometric method using iodine-monochloride was developed for determination of these valence states which is simple, rapid, sensitive and more accurate.
