The research work of my group is focused on the luxuriant areas of Environmental Chemical Engineering. We are working in several key areas:
1. Removal of toxic gases from waste gas stream
We are using various columns like bubble column, semi-batch agitated vessel, spray column, etc. for simultaneous removal of these toxic gases to see the type of mixing between the gas phase and absorbent. The spray column is a gas-liquid contacting device in which liquid absorbent is dispersed as fine droplets in a continuous gas stream to provide large surface area for mass transfer between the phases. Moreover, it provides less pressure drop as compared to packed column. Most of the time, the problem persists due to the acidic nature of final spent absorbent, Therefore, we have worked on various absorbents with additives so as to get useful end products for commercial use.
2. CO2 capture and value addition
Regarding this aspect, we had exhaustively worked on the generation of CO2 solubility data by using completely new absorbents either single or blended keeping in view of CO2 capture and value addition which is very beneficial for a process to be commercialized and thereby reduces the overall cost of the process. As, it discards the regeneration step due to the formation of salable reaction products. We are also focusing on the utilization of CO2 for energy production.
3. Waste to energy and chemicals
In this category of research, we are working on waste biomass utilization. Waste biomass has tremendous opportunity and plenty of potential. Waste biomass utilization has dual benefits in terms of resource generation and waste minimization. We are pursuing research on the production of energy and chemicals from waste biomass via various energy conversion technologies like anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis, gasification, etc. using non-conventional catalysts.
4. Synthesis of low cost Nano-adsorbents
Most of the industries are using water intensive processes. As a result, huge amount of wastewater is generated. It is wise to treat the water, recycle it to the process for reuse rather than discard it to the water body. Regarding wastewater treatment, we are developing low-cost adsorbents. We are also focusing on safe disposal of spent adsorbent, Sometimes; it can be used as fuel or mixed with other materials for environment friendly disposal of this spent adsorbent. In some situation, when adsorption is not alone efficient method, then we aim to use hybrid method for synergism of effective wastewater treatment.
