Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi
About Projects
IIT(B.H.U), Varanasi is celebrating its centenary this year in 2019. Growing from a few hundred in 1919 to now, the institute is now a 7000 member community on campus comprising of students, staff and faculty. In the last hundred years, the institute has seen a lot of visionary infrastructural development. However, now a need is being strongly felt to prepare the institute for the next 100 years. A lot of infrastructural improvements are proposed as part of centenary initiatives. Some of the key projects proposed in improving the industry, academic, students and other stakeholders engagement and overall development.
The number of students that are admitted to IIT(BHU) is increasing by 300 every year. As government laws change, we expect a rise in this number as well. A total of 6117 students were admitted in this academic session as compared to 5587 in 2017-2018. Therefore, there is an urgent need for infrastructure upgrade for the fulfillment of the demand for the better conducive all-round academic environment. Apart from the several centenary projects already announced in the last couple of years, several new infrastructural projects with an estimated cost of around ₹ 425 crores are being envisaged.
These projects would be planned to be built in a phased manner spread around 2 to 3 years. The initial capital expenditure is planned to be raised from the Government with subsequent plans for future expansion from industry and alumni. The proposed center’s facilities would be offered to industry/ government organizations on a pay per use basis to support part of the recurring expenditure. These projects would be setup in a manner to create avenues for sustainable funding options for meeting recurring expenditure for the institute. Further it would augment institute’s efforts in improvement on key criteria of ranking by various national and international ranking agencies such as NIRF.

This is also to ensure that the university continues as a healthy habitat to human, flora and fauna. Building would also designed in a manner to reduce the recurring expenditure through features like energy efficient and environmentally responsive cooling and lighting technologies. An effective waste management system would be built into the overall design to support disposal and recycling. Energy requirement of the building will cater by a renewable source of energy and mix of conventional energy sources. In the proposed centres, the various research centres will be equipped with modern equipment and software to conduct the research activities in specific areas of the research.

Especially on our engagement with Alumni: The strength of the relationship between alumni and the Institute makes is possible to address the above requirements and more. Alumni, by virtue of their professional network, connect the industry to the Institute and help bridge the gap between them. Alumni are also known to have supported the Institute in becoming self-sustaining by creation of corpus, and raising funds to meet various needs of the Institute. All these above are examples where the alumni can support the Institute, and hence there is a need for a strategy for Global Alumni Outreach, given that the alumni are working all over the globe.
- Building a strong community backbone or network across locations

- Developing Industry-Institute Collaboration, for (but not limited to): Internship – practice / application of education; Industry-oriented Research & Development; Industry problem solving; Recruitment and pre-placement of graduates of various programs offered by the Institute; Involving Industry in Education, and bridging Industry-Academia gap
- Resource Mobilisation for: Creation and building up of a Corpus; Establishment of Chair; Creation of Endowments and Scholarships; Creation of Research Funds; Upgradation of Institute’s facilities, viz., Library, Laboratories and Workshops; including creation of new facilities
- Engagement with Government for aligning national and state priorities with institute’s goals. Especially for projects covered by Government Grants and HEFA
- Alumni Network Structure: The Alumni Network usually grows as individual chapters, location by location. To bring these chapters together, and creation of future chapters, it is important to connect them through a structure. The Alumni Network being followed is Federated, a Hub and Spoke Network. Close Coordination with the Institute and Bridge between the Alumni and the Institute. Connecting all chapters for enhancing communication, interaction and engagement between various chapters towards developing a common charter.
This proposed center aims to deliver the following:
