Dr. Sanjay K. Sharma
Engineering and Technology have to innovate and evolve so that the seven billion odd people could survive on this planet with comfort, security, thrill, enthusiasm, and dignity in an eco-friendly way. Aware of this responsibility- I am attempting to cater to societal needs through need-based research and academic courses and technological solutions in the areas of Mining Engineering.
I am a Professor of Mining Engineering since 15th May 2010. I joined this institute on the 19th of March 1993 as Lecturer in Mining Engineering. Before that, I had had a brief stint with the National Airports Authority of India as an Aerodrome Officer.
I am a fellow of the Institution of Engineers of India and a Life Member of ISRM & ISRMTT. I was also a Professional member of the SME, USA. MHRD LEAP training in 2018 @IIT, Kanpur, and NTU, Singapore provided me with fresh perspectives on education, research, and its leadership space.
I am currently collaborating with the office of the Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India, for evolving a policy to EMPOWER YOUNG SCIENTISTS (below 45 years) of India. I had also been invited to deliver a special address at the Swachchhata Sarathi Samaroh under Waste to Wealth Mission of the GoI, at the RIP, IIT Delhi in October 2022..
I have been actively researching and consulting in the areas of Numerical modeling in Rock engineering, Environmental Management Capacity Building (EMCB), Subsidence prediction and management, Rock reinforcements, Rock instrumentation, Rock Blasting and fragmentation, Underground Space Technology, Mine Safety, and Legislation and Mine Management.
I have completed many Research Projects- significant ones include one for the World Bank under EMCB and another for the CSIR, Govt of India on Numerical modeling of Jointed Rock-mass and the third one was t on dynamic slope stability as a response to Kedarnath Ghaati disaster of 2013 (the details are on the other page).
In consultancy, some of my clients included NTPC, Adani Power, CESC, High Court of Allahabad, JITF, Accountant General of Uttar Pradesh, Coal Mining Conglomerates, Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department, UPEIDA, and others. I have convened many National and International Symposia and edited eight proceedings on various themes ( details on a separate page).
I have published Sixty Five research papers in International and National Journals and conferences, guided NINE doctoral theses and 39 M Tech theses in the areas of Mining Engineering. We have been awarded 136 consultancies, about 200 invited /expert lectures, 16 Research and Development Projects, and 6 short-term courses for the industry and research community.
I have served as an expert in many prestigious Government and Non-Government organizations for Doctoral thesis examinations and selection committees.
I am quite appreciated as an orator among my peers. I have delivered more than 200 invited/expert lectures in the areas of Rock Mechanics, Management, Higher Education, Leadership, Motivation, Literature, Philosophy, and Indian Knowledge Systems. Notable ones were keynote lectures at the Indo-Swedish International Philosophical Conference on "Practice-based Knowledge." I was invited as a motivational speaker at the Rotary Club District Conference of Jharkhand and Bihar. I have been regularly contributing as an expert speaker at the UGC-Academic Staff College, Banaras Hindu University for University/College faculty members. I have also lectured for the students/ research scholars on the current themes.
I have made a humble contribution towards system maintenance and building whenever Institute entrusted me with the task. I was a member of the committee that formulated the Post Graduate Ordinances of the IIT(BHU), Varanasi. I was Head, of the Department of Mining Engineering (23rd April 2016 to 22nd April 2019), Chairman, of the Administrative Monitoring Committee & the Institute Lecture Series, IIT(BHU), Varanasi, Chairman, of the Admin Reforms Committee, BHU, and member, of CEP and Conference Committee and Senate Library Committee and the Advisor, Training and Placement of the Institute. I was the Coordinator of the Gandhi Technology Alumni Centre, an Administrative Warden of the First-year students for three years, a Member, of the Careers and Higher Education Committee of the University and the Management Committee of the University Cafeteria, and an NSS officer.
