1. Field of specialization

Broad Area of Specialization: Mechanical Metallurgy

Current Area(s) of Research: Deformation and Fracture, Fatigue Behaviour of Advanced Structural Materials, Failure Analysis; Advanced Steels; Phase Transformations; Corrosion; Additive Manufacturing.

2. Major Research Achievements

Contributed to the understanding of:  Phase transformations and tensile behaviour of high nitrogen steels;  low cycle fatigue behaviour of Zircaloy-2 and deformation and fracture behaviour at different temperatures; Tensile and low cycle fatigue behaviour(LCF) of modified 9Cr-1Mo steel; the effects of surface nano- crystallization on corrosion, tensile and low cycle fatigue behaviour of 2014 and 7075 Al alloys and superalloy IN718; ratcheting fatigue behaviour of Zircaloy-2; Tensile and LCF behaviour of Superalloy IN 617; Ratcheting fatigue behaviour of modified 9Cr-1Mo steel and Superalloy Inconel 617 at different temperatures and tensile behaviour of M300 maraging steel processed by selective laser melting. Some of the important findings are summarized below.

  • Low cycle fatigue behaviour of Zircaloy-2 was investigated at RT, 300oC and 400oC. Dynamic strain ageing (DSA) at room temperature in Zircaloy-2 was reported for the first time. The development of Corduroy structure resulting from cyclic loading in Zircaloy-2 was observed for the first time at room temperature.

  • In a study on tensile and low cycle fatigue behaviour of modified 9Cr-1Mo steel, unusual Rosette tensile fracture in modified 9Cr-1Mo steel specimens was reported. Rosette fracture is a typical mode of tensile fracture with long radial cracks. This type of fracture was observed in the modified 9Cr–1Mo steel in normalized and tempered condition on tensile testing at room temperature (RT). Radial cracks were observed on the fracture surface at different angular intervals. These cracks propagated longitudinally and were mostly associated with prior austenite grain boundaries and lath boundaries. Also observation of grain rotation phenomena by TEM investigation in cyclic deformation behaviour at 600 °C was unique.

  • In a study on the effect of ultrasonic shot peening (USSP) on corrosion behaviour of 7075 aluminium alloy, it was seen that USSP developed surface nanostructure, induced severe plastic deformation, refined grain size up to certain depth and imparts compressive residual stress in the surface region. The enhancement in corrosion resistance of USSPed sample was due to rapid development of uniform, homogeneous and effective passive layer on the nano-structured surface coupled with refinement of the coarse precipitates.

  • In ratcheting fatigue studies of Zircaloy-2, it was observed that with increase in mean stress and stress amplitude accumulation of ratcheting strain was increased and fatigue life was reduced. However, increase in stress rate led to improvement in fatigue life due to less accumulation of ratcheting strain. Dynamic Strain ageing of Zircaloy-2 under Asymmetric loading at 400oC was reported for the first time.

  • Tensile engineering stress-strain curves of the Inconel 617 alloy in solution treated condition tested at different temperatures from room temperature (RT) to 900°C, at different strain rates (ɛ̇)  exhibit serrations at the low temperature of 300oC are predominantly of type B. At 400oC and 500oC, A+B type serrations and at 600°C, C type serrations are noticed which are characteristic features of DSA. Low cycle fatigue (LCF) testing of IN617 showed continuous cyclic hardening at all the three temperatures, at room temperature, 750oC and 850oC irrespective of the strain amplitude. The number of cycles to fracture (fatigue life) decreased with increase in temperature. Non-Masing behaviour was observed at all the three temperatures.

  • Modified 9Cr-1Mo steel and Inconel alloy 617 (IN-617) are two important structural materials, used for piping/ tubing components in nuclear and advanced supercritical power plants. Such components undergo ratcheting fatigue, due to the mean stress, arising from fluctuations in temperature and internal pressure. This investigation showed the dominant role of uniform plastic strain on ratcheting fatigue resistance comparing ratcheting fatigue life of these two materials under identical normalized mean stress and stress amplitude, at ambient temperature. Accumulated plastic strain in IN-617 was considerably higher than that of modified 9Cr-1Mo steel, although ratcheting fatigue life of IN-617 was much higher than that of modified steel. Higher uniform strain in IN-617 was found to be cause of observed behaviour. An important outcome of the present study is that  uniform tensile strain of material can be considered as an important parameter for selection of materials to be used as tubular products in power plants, experiencing ratcheting fatigue.

  • The effect of build orientation on tensile, LCF, and corrosion behaviour of maraging steel (M300) processed by one of the AM techniques, namely, Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) was examined. Better strength with reasonable ductility was observed in the samples built in 45° orientation compared to those at other build orientations and the properties in CM conditions. Surprisingly, most of the AM samples after heat treatment showed increase in strength without significant loss of ductility. Larger degree of work hardening and reversion of martensite to austenite might be the reasons for the observed behaviour. The 0o AB samples showed best fatigue life followed by lives at 45o AB and 90o AB samples.   The corrosion behaviour of the heat treated samples was influenced by the precipitation and reverted austenite present. Best corrosion resistance was observed in 0o orientation among all the orientations studied.
