The departments equip students with the best possible trades of an engineer through their rigorous regime of classes and laboratoray sessions for five days a week. The academic session is divided in two semesters with 100 working days in odd semester and 80 working days in even semester. Growth of the students is constantly monitored by "Class Tests" and regular "Assignments". To continue the momentum of studies each semester has two "Mid semester test" whose marks add up and decide the overall performance of a particular student.
As an indication of academic excellence achieved by Institute of Technology, four of its Engineering Departments are recognized by UGC as Center of Advanced Study; two others are recognized for Special Assistance Programme. In addition, six departments have also received UGC support under the COSIST programme and eight departments have received support under FIST programme of DST, New Delhi. The DST also established the National Electron Microscope Facility (NELMIF) way back in 1982. The Departments of Metallurgical and Mining Engineering have been identified as centers under the Quality Improvement Programme. It has been consistently ranked in the top 10 engineering institutions of the country in various surveys.

The Institute through its demanding curriculum has made it mandatory for all students to pursue an Industrial Internship Programs in their third year accompained by the Industrial Tour to the various department concerned industries.
All the laboratories of the institute are equipped with modern instruments and machinery to equip students with the fundamental knowledge pertaining to their respective streams. All the departments are equiped with the latest and world class technology through their "Sophisticated Instrument Laboratories".
Various Seminars and Guest lectures are organised by the institute to gear up the students for the outside world and to help them keep pace with the changing scenario in industries and research.Professional Communication is a necessary part of the student curriculum.
Students at IIT (BHU) Varanasi enjoy a very vibrant campus life, which besides regular academics is full of extra curricular activities, thus networking them in a social atmosphere. These activities are mainly coordinated by the IT-GYMKHANA, which ensures round the year activities and conducts three major national level festivals namely:
Technex is the annual technical festival. It has footsteps dating back to 1939. It brings together students from all over the country to participate in the celebration of knowledge and creative extravagance along with experts from the fields of both academia and industry. While events may vary from year to year, generally they include or are based upon software development, model exhibition, paper and poster presentation, astronomy, robotics and general awareness.
Kashiyatra is the annual social and cultural festival. Started in 1982, it has been named Sparsh and Spandan in the past. Indian rock bands Parikrama and Indian Ocean, Indian classical musicians Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and Ustad Bismillah Khan, and singers Shubha Mudgal, Shaan, Lucky Ali, Shibani Kashyap and Javed Ali, have performed at Kashiyatra.
Spardha is the annual sports meet in which over 1800 competitors from close to 40 colleges take part. Events include athletics events and games such as cricket, football, hockey, basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton and kabaddi.
Besides these major festivals many minor festivals are also organized by the gymkhana to ensure the complete personality development of all the students.
Almost of every Department of IIT (BHU) Varanasi organizes a fest of its own in order to promote practical application of classroom knowledge and to bring together students of same branch from different colleges all over India. Some of these fests are internationally acknowledged and attract participation from Europe and US as well :
Malaviya Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (MCIIE) was established in 2008. The objective of the MCIIE is to produce successful firms that will leave the program financially viable. Incubator tenants not only benefit from business and technical assistance, they also benefit from official affiliation with the incubator, a supportive community with an entrepreneurial environment, direct link to entrepreneurs, and immediate networking and commercial opportunities with other tenant firms. Kashi Utkarsh is a student-run, non-profit organization working for the alleviation of misery, penury and disease chiefly in the village of Lehartara.

| The Training & Placement Office, IIT (BHU) Varanasi facilitates the process of placement of students passing out from the Institute besides collaborating with leading organizations and institutes in setting up of internship and training program of students.
The office liaises with various industrial establishments, corporate houses etc which conduct campus interviews and select graduate and post-graduate students from all disciplines. The Training & Placement Office provides the infra-structural facilities to conduct group discussions, tests and interviews besides catering to other logistics. The Office interacts with many industries in the country, of which nearly 200 companies visit the campus for holding campus interviews. The placement season runs through the course of the year commencing the last week of July through to March. Pre-Placement Talks are also conducted in this regard as per mutual convenience. Job offers, dates of interviews, selection of candidates etc. are announced through the Training & Placement Office. The Placement Office is assisted by a committee comprising representatives of students from the under-graduate and post-graduate engineering streams. The committee evolves a broad policy framework every year besides a set of rules which are inviolable.
